Optimized Zinc for Piglets, Pigs and Sows
Due to a specific unique processing, zinc oxide in Zinteral is protected in a matrix which limits degradation by the stomach HCl. By this mechanism, zinc oxide reaches the small intestine and can exert its protective function against pathogenic micro-organisms (e.g. E. coli).
Although zinc fulfils a number of physiological functions and plays an important role for instance in gene-expression, DNA regulation and protein metabolism, the pig’s requirement for this element is relatively low (50 – 100 ppm source NRC). Including an additional safety margin, recommended nutritional levels vary from 50 – 150 ppm and comply with the maximum allowed total zinc level of 150 ppm in the EU.
Therapeutic levels of zinc oxide (> 2000 ppm Zn) by far exceeding the nutritional requirement are used for prevention or to cure diarrhoea caused by intestinal microflora imbalance. However, high zinc oxide doses alone or in combination with an antibiotic need the prescription of a veterinarian and are only allowed to be used for a short period of time, as long term application can cause negative side effects like lower feed intake and interference with other minerals.
Zinteral offers both, a contribution to the daily zinc requirement, as this zinc is digestible and performance securing, comparable to zinc oxide at therapeutic levels.
